GIS as an Effective Tool to Manage Survey Data will be presented by Mr. Rene Garcia and by Robert L. Young, LS, owners of Digital Mapping Services, LLC. Robert Young is also the president and owner of Young and Associates Surveying and Mapping, LLC.

This will be a hands-on course; each attendee will receive a DVD that has GIS DATA (for Hennepin County) and a free GIS software tool, “ESRI Arc Reader,” to allow all attendees to view and use the NGS, any other parcel or survey data, and all sorts of useful data for the County.

Prior to plugging in the DVDs, you will hear the history of how we learned to best utilize our GIS to manage our surveying business. GIS, Base Maps, Work flows, Importance of using State Plane Coordinates, available resources to “enhance” your base map, using the data to prepare jobs, perpetuation of the work your firm does into the future. Use of aerial data and other imagery to enhance deliverables, databases and how to link them to the geographic data. Hyper-linking information to your base map, and archiving data into a digital format, Database creation, maintenance, and management for increased productivity, job racking,
external data sources and how to find and use them.

Please note that it is highly recommended, but not mandatory to bring a laptop computer to the GIS Course.


NEW! Roslyn Wade, Labor Standards Director with the Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) will present information on the outcome of the recent prevailing wage hearing from 4-5 p.m.

This one hour breakout session is FREE to all MSPS members, whether or not you are attending the Spring Workshop.


Mr. Rene Garcia is the President of Digital Mapping Services, LLC, secretary of GLIS (Geographic and Land Information Society), Chairman of the GIS Advisory Board at Del Mar College and has 10 plus years of working in the GIS field. Rene Garcia has been employed by Digital Mapping Services (DMS) for over 7 years. He is now the President and co-owner of DMS and Project Manager for many of the GIS projects that the company is involved with. Mr. Garcia has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and has worked in the GIS marketplace for over 10 years. His understanding of the Surveying and Mapping industries need for GIS has propelled him to the top in the business as one who understands the importance of Survey Grade GPS data for utility, parcel, control, and survey layers. He is working on his GISP, and is a presenter of papers at the ESRI User’s Conference and Survey Summit. Rene serves as the Private Sector representative on a GIS Advisory Committee at Del Mar College where he has also worked as an adjunct professor in their GIS program.

Robert L. Young, RPLS, is currently the President and Principal Surveyor of Young and Associates Surveying and Mapping LLC – Fort Worth, Texas, which was formed in 2007. Formerly with Frontier Surveying, Robert also founded and is Senior Vice President
of Digital Mapping Services LLC., a full-service and rapidly growing GIS company formed in 2000. He holds a B.S. from Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas in Agriculture Economics.

Robert is an active member of the Texas Society of Professional Land Surveyors as a Director at the State Level and serves on the GIS committee. He is Chairman of the TSPS Membership Committee, and in addition to writing courses and articles he makes presentations when called upon. This serves to further his personal knowledge as well as the knowledge and skills of Surveyors and GIS professionals in Texas and other States. As current President of the GLIS, a Member Organization of ACSM, he remains active in NSPS and is also involved in the Americas Petroleum Surveyor Group (APSG). Robert writes for American Surveyor and other industry publications.

In 2008, he was chosen to be the Commission Three Delegate to FIG which deals with Spatial Information Management.
